today I was sure I was on the wax starship!
a full class took instruction from THE Cathy Valentine...encaustic artist extraordinaire!
The point of the class....called "Going Deep"... was to challenge yourself to add layers and layers and layers of encaustic medium (beeswax + damar resin) over marks made with india ink,
encaustic pigments and pigment sticks all applied to your surface....
using HAND MADE TOOLS.
Cathy shows us how...
using all kinds of twigs, sticks, chain, rope, cloth, brillo pads...etc
Cathy showed us all how to pre-heat the board to get it ready to accept the wax
the results were amazing...BUT...
the purpose of all the layers was to show you how to "see deeply into your piece".
Every mark you laid down in the wax could be seen at one level of wax or another ... even after 10-15 layers of wax had been applied and fused (between each layer) using a torch.
do you see how you can see beyond the top layer?
and occasionally colored wax was added too
I'm sure I dont have to tell you how FAAAAAHBULOUS this day was...this was Cathys DEMO sample that she worked and re-worked a dozen times while demoing new techniques....oh my!!
tomorrow..... more class....
**************
thought for the day !!!
BEAM ME UP !!!

What wonderful fun. And great layers of was and ink. I LOVE Cathy's demo piece...WOW!

looks like you had a wonderful class! the wax does look more interesting the deeper you look! If you are doing this layered look can you imbed bits and pieces at the same time? have fun!
