Tomorrow we head off to Easter Island, so, there may be NO internet for a few days.....allow me to fill you in on the 5 miles of walking we did today !!!
first up...a winery..La Concha y Toro
as someone who loves to take pictures, but doesn't drink (except for the fake shots in pictures !!) I have to say I loved the flowers
and the grapes to make the wine
and the vineyards
and I enjoyed the tour of the winery
and The Lenster loved the free sampling...especially cause he got to sample mine too!!
and....much to the delight of the person I saw retrieve it...I 'abandoned' a little piece of jewelry on a bench in the courtyard .
Then....off to eat...local food...and let me tell you...DELISH !
Pastel de choclo (corn)
the dish is prepared with sweetcorn, which is ground to form a paste, and seasoned with basil itself ground and then blended into the corn. The mixture is pre-cooked with milk and a little lard and then, when ready, it is used as a topping for the filling. The filling, known as “pino”, contains minced beef cooked with onions, paprika, other spices, and sometimes chicken, is also used as a filling for traditional Chilean empanadas. The pino is laid in the bottom of the paila with slices of hard boiled egg, olives and raisins.
Humitas in Chile are prepared with fresh corn, onion, basil, and butter or lard. They are wrapped in corn husks and baked or boiled. They may contain ají verde (green chili pepper). The humitas are kept together during cooking with thread or twine.
They can be made savory, sweet, or sweet and sour, served with added sugar, chile pepper, salt, tomato, olive and paprika etc
then...SHOPPING the local crafts...oh what fun and.... a lot of walking.
This tree had 'thorns' growing on it...sharp too.
and check out the roots of this old tree
covered in LEATHER !! Too gorgeous
great idea for an old plastic bottle
Lapis Lazuli is very popular here
we loved this gals work and bought a small piece from her.
I was upset cause I hadn't seen a single cat since we were here (lotsa friendly dogs tho!) ...and then...all at once...they were everywhere ! Yay!!
and, then, big brave us....we took a train back to our hotel just like the locals (because we wanted to stay longer) ...with a little help from our guide given us instructions as to where to pick up the train.
Lenny, Reiko and Michele are standing in a specialized area (green border on floor) that is just for the disabled or families with young children only !! I've never seen that before!
so....use your imagination in case I can't post for a few days and imagine the fun we're having on Easter Island !
