Day 2 of workshops at Beadfest and I'm beginning to understand "the saw" a bit bitter...not that the poor muscles in my back want to get to know it any better !! I know...you need to master the whole "zen" thing involved in sawing...well..I'm not zenning, at least not just yet !
So Linda begins the day and explains the process...(even tho I swear she looks like she's singing The Star Spangled Banner !!)
JUST KIDDING Linda....
she demonstrates my "new fav thing"...ha ha
She zens !
today we're making a metal piece that incorporates a "void".....empty open space. Much harder then you think, (well, certainly the first time !) but, once you grasp the basics actually not hard at all.
We get to pick out a stone for the center, My first choice proved too complex...so, midstream I switched.
First up.....GREAT fun in texturizing the metal.
Linda has samples of some of her textures
Tracing the pattern of your stone, cutting (or sawing) the metal to shape...
annealing the metal
learning how to saw within the pattern...those 'saw' people are so clever !! Those will become the prongs that hold the stone.
Linda demonstrates the mechanics of the design. ...why I didn't just pick a nice happy, easy circle like other classmates
is beyond me !!
Lindas' class sample showed a circle

Now we have the front & back ready
we are going to turn the edges back a tiny bit to create depth and more finished look
Lets polish it up
Let's get those holes punched for the rivets (I love rivets)
and....6 hours later.....
OKAY....I have a long way to go with these techniques but I sure did enjoy myself and I LOVED what other students made.

Here are more samples of Lindas' work.
Yes...she SAWED this number 5
So, Passover begins on Monday but I'm gonna spend my weekend watching 'sawing" videos
What about you guys?
